The Upside-Down Church

25 Jul

His name is Louis and he’s been in prison for 27 years for armed robbery.  I met him a couple of weeks ago in Angola State Penitentiary during Awana’s Returning Hearts Celebration.  He told me his story of thievery and addiction…and then he told me his story of salvation.  How he finally realized that the attitude he had and that the addiction to drugs would only continue if he didn’t change anything and how one day he was saved from it all…while in prison.

Sometimes the church is an upside-down church.  What I mean is sometimes the people who society deems as the lowest of the low and the dirtiest of the dirty are the ones who find God and then talk about Him with no shame or fear of rejection.  After all, what does a person who is in prison have to lose?  They’ve already lost everything, what does it matter if someone doesn’t like what they are saying?

I went to prison for a weekend to help kids and dads spend time bonding and I came home wanting to be more like the Godly inmates that I met.  I’m pretty sure it’s going to be the upside-down church that starts to do big things in this world and I can’t wait to see what happens.

Oh…and Louis…he is currently studying at the seminary to become a pastor.  See?  Upside-down church.
